According to a recent news story from Insider.com, the EV manufacturer Tesla created a covert team to cancel appointments to suppress complaints. It added that the performance of the cars had been exaggerated and that repairs were rarely necessary.

The most unnerving news is that Tesla has overstated the range of its electric vehicles for years.

According to the report, which cited a source familiar with an early software design by Tesla, the EV manufacturer installed range-estimating software on the dashboards of its vehicles. According to the report, instead of displaying the actual driving range, the software provided a "rosy" projection of how far cars could travel before needing a recharge.

Multiple sources told Reuters that as an unintended consequence, the company was inundated with complaints and service appointments from drivers who expected a longer driving range.

The article goes on to state, the automaker created a covert "Diversion Team" in Las Vegas to cancel appointments in order to reduce the number of complaints.

The team was monitored based on the number of appointments they rescheduled each day and closed hundreds of cases per week on average. In the majority of instances, the Teslas likely did not require repairs; rather their performance had been exaggerated.
