BMW Tire Care Schedule

  • Check pressure monthly, when tires are cold, using the placard on your driver's door jamb or fuel door. Reset the tire pressure monitor in iDrive after adjusting.
  • Inspect tread at every service visit, and keep an eye on the inner edges, where BMW tires often wear first.
  • Rotate when possible. BMWs with the same size tire front and rear can be rotated about every 5,000-7,500 miles. Many BMWs have staggered sizes, with wider tires in back, and can't be rotated front to rear.
  • Check alignment with new tires, once a year, and after any hard pothole hit on I-75 or I-16.
  • Balance with every new tire and whenever you feel vibration at highway speed.
  • Watch tire age. Have tires inspected regularly after six years. Middle Georgia heat ages rubber faster.

Check Your BMW's Tread at Home

  • The three penny rule: Place a penny upside down in three spots across the tread: the inner, center and outer grooves. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head in any spot, that part of the tire is at 2/32", Georgia's legal minimum. Uneven results point to an alignment or pressure issue.
  • The quarter test: If you see the top of Washington's head, you're near 4/32". Wet-road grip is dropping, especially with performance tires.
  • Wear bars: When the tread is flush with the small raised bars in the grooves, the tire needs replacing.

BMW Tire FAQs: BMW of Macon

Buying BMW Tires

It depends on your model, tire size, brand and whether you need run-flat or summer performance tires. A 3 Series on 17-inch tires costs far less than an X5 or M model on 21-inch tires. Call our service department at (888) 785-5705 for an itemized quote, and check our current service specials.

BMWs often use wide, low-profile tires with high speed ratings, run-flat construction or star-marked specifications developed with BMW. That engineering delivers the steering feel and braking BMW drivers expect.

Often, because of size, speed rating and technology. Many brands offer BMW sizes across price points, and we'll help you find the right balance of performance and value.

Online retailers can be a good source, but you still need careful mounting, balancing, a TPMS reset and torque to BMW specifications. At BMW of Macon, we handle everything in one visit with technicians who know your vehicle. Get a quote from us and compare the full installed price.

For many BMW owners, yes. Proper mounting protects your wheels, correct torque and balance protect your suspension, and BMW-trained technicians catch things others may miss.

Ask your service advisor about current service coupons, tire promotions and manufacturer rebates. Bundling tires with an alignment can also add value.

Check our service specials, watch for spring and fall tire promotions, keep tires properly inflated, and keep your alignment in check. Good alignment prevents the inner-edge wear that shortens BMW tire life.

You can shop tires online through the BMW Tire Center link on our website, then schedule installation with our service team.

Choosing the Right Tires

BMW works with leading brands such as Michelin, Pirelli, Bridgestone, Continental, Goodyear and Hankook to develop star-marked (★) tires for specific models. Those tires are BMW's recommended choice.

It depends on your model and how you drive. A star-marked tire in the right size is always a strong choice. We can help you compare options for comfort, tread life and performance.

Both are excellent, and both make star-marked tires for BMW. Michelin is often praised for tread life and a smooth ride. Pirelli is popular for sharp steering and sporty feel. Our team can share what works best on your model.

Yes, as long as the size, load index and speed rating meet BMW's requirements. Star-marked tires are tuned specifically for BMW, so we recommend them first.

Run-flats have reinforced sidewalls that let you keep driving a limited distance at reduced speed after losing pressure, usually about 50 miles at up to 50 mph. Check your owner's manual for your model's limits. Many BMWs come with run-flats and no spare.

Yes, but plan ahead, since most run-flat BMWs don't have a spare. Many owners add a tire repair kit. We can help you weigh ride comfort against convenience.

Many BMWs, especially M models and performance packages, come with summer tires. They grip best above about 45°F and lose grip on cold mornings. For year-round driving in Macon, Warner Robins and Perry, many owners choose high-performance all-season tires.

Performance tires give the sharpest steering and braking. All-season tires last longer, ride quieter and handle cool weather better. We'll match the tire to how you drive.

Check the tire placard on your driver's door jamb or the sidewall of your current tires. Many BMWs have different front and rear sizes, so check both.

The load index shows how much weight each tire can carry, and the speed rating shows its maximum sustained speed. Always match or exceed your BMW's original ratings.

We recommend matching tires on all four corners, or at least on each axle. Mixing brands or models can affect handling and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

Tire Care and Safety

Many all-season tires last 30,000 to 50,000 miles. Summer performance tires, especially on the rear of staggered setups, may last 15,000 to 25,000 miles depending on how you drive.

If your tires are the same size front and rear, every 5,000–7,500 miles. Staggered setups can't be rotated front to back.

Tread at 2/32", heavy wear on the inner edges, sidewall bulges or cracks, vibration, more road noise, or a pressure warning that keeps returning.

Use the three penny rule across the tread, or a simple tread depth gauge. Or stop by BMW of Macon and we'll measure it for you.

Worn tires lengthen braking distances, increase hydroplaning risk and dull the precise steering that makes a BMW fun to drive.

It warns you when pressure drops. After adjusting your pressure or installing new tires, reset the system in iDrive so it learns the new baseline.

Correct pressure keeps steering sharp, protects your wheels from pothole damage and maximizes tread life. Low pressure is especially hard on low-profile tires.

Inner-edge wear from alignment settings, wheel damage from potholes on low-profile tires, run-flat ride firmness, and summer tires losing grip on cold mornings.

Clean them and store them in a cool, dry place out of sunlight. Summer performance tires shouldn't be stored or used in freezing temperatures.

Repairs and Installation

Often, if the puncture is small and in the main tread area. Damage to the sidewall or shoulder, or a tire driven while significantly underinflated, usually means replacement.

It depends. Many tire manufacturers and BMW advise against repairing a run-flat that has been driven with little or no pressure, because internal damage may not be visible. We'll inspect it and give you a clear answer.

For your safety. A run-flat driven while deflated can have hidden sidewall damage. Following manufacturer guidance protects you and your passengers.

Small punctures in the central tread can usually be repaired. Sidewall cuts, bulges, large punctures or damaged run-flats should be replaced.

Low-profile tires need modern mounting equipment that protects the wheel finish and TPMS sensors, plus precise balancing. Our technicians are equipped and trained for it.

Improper mounting can scratch or bend wheels, damage TPMS sensors or tire beads, and cause vibration. If you have concerns about work done elsewhere, we're happy to inspect it.

Fitment check, mounting, balancing, valve and TPMS service, torque to BMW specifications, pressure setting and disposal.

It depends on tire size and type. Run-flats and larger wheels take more time. Call us for an itemized quote.

Pricing depends on your model. Call our service department for a quote, and check our service specials page.

Disposal covers responsible tire recycling. Georgia also applies a small state fee to new tire sales. Every charge appears clearly on your quote.

Many BMWs come with run-flats instead of a spare. Others include a mobility kit with sealant and a compressor. If your BMW is covered by BMW Roadside Assistance, you can also call for help.

Warranty and Protection

BMW's new vehicle warranty generally doesn't cover tires. Tires are covered by the tire manufacturer's warranty, and many include a treadwear warranty. Ask us about BMW tire and wheel protection plans.

With low-profile tires and premium wheels, pothole damage can be costly. Many Middle Georgia BMW owners find tire and wheel protection worth it for peace of mind.
